XCF is the standard file format in GIMP. However, you can only use it to edit images within the program. This tutorial gives a detailed breakdown of how to save GIMP as JPEG.

Go to the File menu in the main toolbar and then select Export As.

In the dialog box that appears, edit the file name and choose the location you want to save the image in.

At the bottom of the dialog box, select click on the “+” symbol next to the Select File Type field.

Once you click Export, the Export Image as JPEG dialog will pop up. Here, you can adjust the Quality slider settings to your liking, although the default 90 works just fine. Click Export to complete the process.
